In reality, I would have had to have walked a mile and half to burn that much. Even though it says I only walked 370 feet, it says I burned 150 calories. Even though 90% of it was me sitting down, since it had intermittent movement, Google counted it as one long, extremely slow walk. Part of my problematic entry is from when I was supervising some toddlers for 45 minutes. If you do a brisk two-mile walk in hour or if you occasionally meander around the kitchen while you wait for dinner to cook for an hour, Google counts them as the same thing. Google just goes off time, not actual exercise.This is moderately bad for actual exercise, but it's extremely bad in light of Google's second problem.

However, if I say, leisurely walked 3 miles-which would burn about 300 calories-Google will say it burned those 300 calories plus the BMR for that hour walk for a total of 380 calories. If I did literally nothing all day, it would admittedly say correctly that I burned zero calories. Yet.Google does include your basal metabolic rate in any exercises for some reason. This is a fundamental part of bodily existence, so it obviously shouldn't be included in exercise. Even if I were to lie in bed all day and not move at all, my body would burn about 1,900 calories just breathing and moving and replacing cells and stuff. Your basal metabolic is how many calories your body burns just keeping you alive.

    You could automatically have it update your calorie burn on more active days to keep things more accurate. One of these is that you can sync your steps with your favorite fitness app. However, it also has some veeerrryyy questionable "features". I even got my cheapo smart scale's app to sync with MyFitnessPal through Google Fit so I don't even have to type my weight anymore like some plebeian. It has an easy way to log calories on my phone or the web with a good searchable database, and it used to have a magical barcode scanner. To accomplish this, I am/was a big fan of MyFitnessPal. As I lay out in my (not) famous weight loss book, calorie control is key to any weight loss program.
